The Morning Star is one of the first of the next generation in Mon Calamari star cruisers for the New Republic Navy to use in its continuing fight against the remnants of the Galactic Empire. With the impending collapse of the Empire, ships such as the Morning Star are being built as fast as possible in order to bolster the Alliance's fleet. Even though they scored a huge victory at Endor, the war to restore the Republic is far from over and capital ships are in great demand to bring the war to a quick end.
Originally intended to be a one-of-a-kind starship, the Morning Star was instead the prototype of a new generation of cruisers. Unlike its predecessors, it was built as a warship from the keel up, giving the Morning Star more firepower and better performance overall than the previous Mon Calamari cruisers. While it mounts the usual 48 turbolaser batteries, 20 ion cannon batteries, and 6 tractor beam projectors, the Morning Star has a 50% increase in shield strength, a 10% higher peak power output, and a modern alloy-composite hull with full internal bracing. The Mon Calamari shipwrights took their usual care to make sure that, even as a weapon of war, the Morning Star is as much a work of art as a Jedi's lightsaber.
There is one starfighter squadron presently aboard the Morning Star: Red. Red is a multi-role unit, who's primary mission is to train new pilots and school existing pilots in the finer details of combat piloting. At one point another unit, Blue Squadron, was aboard the Morning Star; is was a multi-role support unit that took on several different types of missions, including ground combat support. Red also has a combat division dedicated to multi-role missions, such as space superiority, escorting, recon, fighter interception, heavy attack, strike, and bombing runs.
The primary craft for Red is the X-wing, with the A-wing interceptor and B-wing/Y-wing bomber as secondary, though they provide training in all Alliance fighters. Since the X-wing is a well rounded and best suited to almost all forms of combat, it is the choice of many for uncertain missions.
Red has to be ready to adapt to the needs of these uncertain times. Dogfighting skills are important to the life of any pilot, whether they are flying a bomber or a recon scout. The ability to evade and engage is the difference between life and death for the fighter pilots aboard the Morning Star.
Like any large vessel, the Morning Star also carries several support craft, shuttles, and transports. At least one of the pilots has his personal craft embarked aboard; per old Alliance tradition, this is allowed as long as the ship's owner handles most or all servicing themself.
