Comments:
The BTL-S3 Y-wing is a solid, dependable craft that was introduced soon after the Clone Wars and remains popular to this day. Many early Alliance victories were won with Y-wings. The combination of torpedoes and top-mounted ion cannons makes it an effective commerce raider. It is also used for strike missions against Imperial starships and ground installations. It fares poorly against most fighters, however, due to its low speed and sluggish handling.

The stock Y-wing has a pilot and a backseat gunner who handles the ion turret. An astromech droid (typically an R2 or R5 unit) provides onboard repair capability and stores up to ten sets of hyperspace coordinates. The -A4 variant of the Y-wing, known as the Longprobe, replaces the gunner's position with additional consumables and a navicomputer capable of computing its own hyperspace jumps. The ion cannons are fixed either forward or backward in this configuration.

Tactical:
One of the few good things about being so slow is that increasing your laser recharge won't make much difference. And with lasers, ions and torpedoes, you're ready for anything. The lasers are mounted so close together that you're almost certain to hit with both. Finally, a trick that some Y-wing pilots use is to rapidly switch between lasers and ions for sustained fire.

Many pirates, private space forces and other independents also use Y-wings, so you should be prepared to face them in combat. Fire a few shots at any that seem to be making torpedo or disabling runs on friendly craft, especially unarmed freighters or shuttles, to make them break off. Then pick one, get on his tail, and match speeds. You will probably find that they are easy targets to hit, but require a lot of pounding to put down.
