Comments:
The plans and prototypes for the X-wing were brought to the Alliance by a defecting Incom design team. Since then, it has become the Alliance's signature starfighter. Balancing speed, protection and firepower, the X-wing is a fast and hard-hitting craft which shines in the anti-starfighter role. Variable-geometry S-foils give the X-wing its name, folding for cruise and separating for combat. Its hyperspace capability makes it ideal for Alliance hit-and-fade tactics. Even today, with new designs entering service, the X-wing remains one of the best all-around starfighters in the Galaxy.
Tactical:
The biggest decision you'll probably have to make in an X-wing is how to link your lasers. Single-shot is good for precision shooting or hosing down an area with suppression fire, while dual-linked can bracket an opponent or kill a T/F with one shot. Quad-linked lasers reduce your rate of fire the most, but are best for doing damage to a slow or stationary target or for guaranteeing a one-shot kill (even if some miss).
Don't forget your secondary armament. It's usually a waste to use a torpedo on anything smaller than a shuttle or transport, but sometimes it can break up a formation and help you score the first kill.
